No Irish Pub is complete without the element of “Trad,” or Traditional Irish music sessions. A long standing tradition from the Emerald Isle, traditional Irish music is a series of song and dance tunes, passed down from one musician to another, through several generations. Traditional Irish music comes in many forms, from drinking songs and ballads, to upbeat dance tunes like reels, hornpipes and jigs. Each song tells its own story, and each musician finds their own stylistic way to tell these stories. The fiddle tends to be the central instrument in traditional Irish dance music, followed by flutes and pipes, and the harp (can’t leave out the harp!) once played an integral part as well.
While traditional Irish music as we know it is thought to have originated somewhere around the sixteenth century, much of it has evolved and grown in popularity, some even becoming mainstream, throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Bands like The Chieftains, The Dubliners, The Cranberries and The Corrs all use the influence of traditional Irish music in their popular tunes, and brought new awareness to Irish music and culture. Trad also has influences on American country music, and many punk-genre artists include elements such as fiddles and Irish inspired lyrics into their music as well. One example of this would be Thin Lizzie’s cover of “Whiskey in the Jar,” a well known Irish drinking song.
The diversity of styles and tastes means that there is something for everyone to be found in Irish music. And whether artists are charting new territories or keeping traditions alive, music will continue to be a vital part of Irish culture.
